Child therapy concentrates on the emotional and social health of a child. It is different from adult therapy in the nature of treatment, language, environment, and goals. While adult therapists look back on past life events to identify the source of a problem, child psychologists and child therapists help children form a strong sense of self, emotional strength, good relationships and good communication. It is forward-oriented. The way therapists communicate with children during child therapy is mainly non-verbal. A relationship is formed through activities, unstructured play, and games. Because children are not always able to translate actions or feelings into words, a therapist must be able to speak both ‘adult’ and ‘child.’ Child therapy aims not only to alleviate symptoms, but also to improve self-esteem, help increase communication, encourage development, construct an emotional repertoire, and develop emotional vocabulary.
