You’re not alone in wondering these things. Here are answers from our clinical team.
Absolutely. Many people experience a mix of relief, grief, anger, and confusion. A diagnosis can reframe your entire life history — that’s a lot to process. Give yourself time and consider working with a neuro-affirming therapist.
That’s entirely up to you. Disclosure is a personal choice. Some people find it helpful to share with close friends, family, or their employer to get support. Others prefer privacy. There’s no right answer — only what feels safe for you.
No. Being neurodivergent means your brain works differently — not worse. Many challenges come from living in systems designed for neurotypical people, not from the neurodivergence itself. A diagnosis is a tool for self-understanding, not a label of deficit.
Not at all. Late diagnosis is incredibly common, especially for women and people of color. Understanding yourself at any age opens the door to accommodations, self-compassion, and strategies that actually work for your brain.
Your diagnosis gives you legal protections. Here’s how to use them.
The ADA and Section 504 protect you. You’re legally entitled to reasonable accommodations at work and school.
Start with a written request to HR or your school’s disability office. You’ll need documentation from your clinician.
Flexible deadlines, noise-cancelling headphones, written instructions, movement breaks, adjusted lighting, and remote work options.
There’s no “right” order and no deadline. Come back to any step whenever you need it. Your neurodivergent brain isn’t broken — it just came with a different manual.
