Autism Therapists for Adults: How to Choose the Right One

Autistic adults have varied communication, sensory and mental health needs.

Check the individual clinician

  • Autistic adults have varied communication, sensory and mental health needs. Ask a prospective therapist how they adapt sessions, work with co-occurring conditions and include your priorities. Professional licensure, relevant experience and a workable therapeutic relationship matter more than a generic autism label.

  • Interstate telepsychology depends on the individual psychologist’s authority and your location at the appointment. Under PSYPACT, an E.Passport is a prerequisite for, rather than a substitute for, Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT). Operational jurisdictions and other licensing routes must be checked before booking.

Ask about adaptations before starting

  • Describe what makes a session easier or harder for you: spoken versus written information, lighting, pacing, open-ended questions or time to process. Ask whether the therapist can incorporate your preferences while working toward goals you choose together.

  • Useful goals may concern anxiety, relationships, daily functioning or recovery from stressful experiences. Therapy should not require you to hide harmless autistic traits simply to appear more typical. Review progress and discuss a change in approach or provider if the work is not meeting your needs.
